VARIETIES: 10 white and 10 black varieties.
SOILS: al-alluvial and granitic and slate near the mountains.
CLIMATE: Gentle winters with few frosts and hot summers with high insolation, tempered by sea breezes. The tramontana (north wind) is vital for the good health of the strains.
WINES: Whites are interesting and often appreciate a touch of wood. Those of good white grenache, elegant and sometimes saline, are a delight. The Cariñena Blac is another variety that you have to follow very closely. With regard to the blacks, the cooperatives produce new superllaminer wine, and many black liquor, toasted, ballistic and potent wineries that could make us think, in some cases in the Priorat. Do not forget the sweet wines such as muscat and, especially, the sweet grenache: a wine full of aromas.
DO Empordà grows by leaps and bounds. More and more wineries that make wine of very high quality and even at fairly contained prices. The Garnacha and the Cariñena,in their white and black versions, are very solid foundations on which to build the reality and future of the DO. If we add to this a sublime wine like Garnacha del Empordà, a great level among winemakers and fantastic conditions for the vineyard, nothing should prevent the DO from continuing to grow at a good pace. Maybe it is not the best area for delicate blacks, but if you want wine with character and drive, with those of the Empordà you will enjoy the most.
