SITUATION: the Maresme and the Vallès Oriental
VARIETIES: here the white raisin (xarel-lo) is the queen, although there are up to twenty authorized types of grapes. Grenache (in all its colors) and chardonnay are also quite present. Among the red varieties of foreign origin, the syrah is probably the one that has adapted better.
SOILS: the sandstone (decomposed granite) shares territory with the clay soils.
CLIMATE: Mediterranean, with mild winters and warm summers.
WINES: whites are the most characteristic, especially white raisins. The proximity to the sea, added to the sand, makes the wines of the DO. Alella are friendly and easy to understand in any of their colors. They are moderately fruity, fresh and with good touch. You can find rosé, red, sparkling and sweet, but, without a doubt, Alella is a land of whites.
It is one of the smallest DO, but also one of the oldest DO (1953). The proximity to Barcelona means that its surroundings are heavily urbanized and that the vineyard is quite limited. The DO Alella grew inland, precisely because of this lack of space, and most of the vineyards are small. The vinyna correct hydration of the grape and to favor thus a correct maturation. With these conditions are obtained very balanced wines that make Alella a reference among white wines. The few wineries that work are doing things quite well, and their wines begin to clearly express their place of origin. If you want a good white wine, neither too "dry" nor too fruity and that worked with most meals, DO Alella may be the answer
It extends to the northeast of the Iberian Peninsula, between the Mediterranean Sea and the Pyrenees.
It employs around 60,000 hectares of wine-growing area distributed in more than 300 municipalities of Catalonia, where the vineyard has been cultivated tracefully and has characterized an inherent characteristic of its landscapes.
In total, 27 varieties of grapes are authorized for the production of their wines.
La Do Catalunya protects white, pink and black wines. These can search the maximum expression of the raw material, the grapes, by means of the fermentation of the samples in stainless steel tubs and under a strict temperature control; Or, present the bouquet characteristic of the contact with the oak wood, which at the same time enriches them in complexity.
They complete the offer, although in a small proposal, the wines of needle and the wines of liquor.
It is a southern region of 649 square kilometers of extension.
Its natural conditions make it a privileged area for the cultivation of the vineyards and the elaboration of excellent wines and cavas. Here is the Conca de Barberà Designation of Origin, which currently has 6,000 hectares of vineyards and an average production of 250,000 hl. of wine The first Regulation of the DO Conca de Barberà and its Regulatory Council was approved by the Order of the Generalitat of 19 November 1985 and modified later in 1989.
In 1997 the wineries of the region founded the Wine and Cava Bottling Association of the Conca de Barberà in order to promote the wines and cavas they produce as high quality products and with the guarantee label the denomination of origin. Currently, this entity has 22 associated wineries.
SITUATION: southern area of Lleida (divided into seven subzones: the Segrià, Raimat, Artesa de Segre, Urgell, the Pallars, the Valleys of the Corb River and Les Garrigues).
VARIETIES: 12 white varieties and up to 9 black varieties.
SOILS: limestone and granite with low content of organic matter and clay.
CLIMATE: dry continental, with cold winters and very hot summers.
WINES: there are too many styles and, probably, too many grape varieties. There are fresh and light white wines, mostly with cava grapes (especially macabeo), very interesting chardonnay and examples of cold weather varieties (riesling) planted in height with some very good results. But it would be necessary to revise the catalog of varieties and perhaps bet strongly for the macabeo (delicious in barrel) or for some foreign variety under the aegis of the DO Catalunya. Blacks are usually multivarietal (they combine Catalan and foreign grapes), Mediterranean (warm, potent aromatically and with good fruit) and, often, balsamic.
In general, I find whites more attractive than blacks, despite admitting that we can find some delicious examples of the latter. The board varieties used in the coupages of red wines, where sometimes, "pebrotegen" (due to poor maturation) and distort the whole;the syrah seems to behave better. Perhaps we should extend the tempranillo to make a predominant variety where the thermal contrats guarantee a good aromatic.
The DO Costers del Segre is very large and heterogeneous, and produces modern wines of great quality; one should only look for a common personality that the public could clearly associate with this territory.
SITUATION: in the province of Girona. Divided between the Alt Empordà (to the north, around Garriguella and Vilajuïga) and the Baix Empordà (to the south, between the bisval and Calonge).
VARIETIES: 10 white and 10 black varieties.
SOILS: al-alluvial and granitic and slate near the mountains.
CLIMATE: Gentle winters with few frosts and hot summers with high insolation, tempered by sea breezes. The tramontana (north wind) is vital for the good health of the strains.
WINES: Whites are interesting and often appreciate a touch of wood. Those of good white grenache, elegant and sometimes saline, are a delight. The Cariñena Blac is another variety that you have to follow very closely. With regard to the blacks, the cooperatives produce new superllaminer wine, and many black liquor, toasted, ballistic and potent wineries that could make us think, in some cases in the Priorat. Do not forget the sweet wines such as muscat and, especially, the sweet grenache: a wine full of aromas.
DO Empordà grows by leaps and bounds. More and more wineries that make wine of very high quality and even at fairly contained prices. The Garnacha and the Cariñena,in their white and black versions, are very solid foundations on which to build the reality and future of the DO. If we add to this a sublime wine like Garnacha del Empordà, a great level among winemakers and fantastic conditions for the vineyard, nothing should prevent the DO from continuing to grow at a good pace. Maybe it is not the best area for delicate blacks, but if you want wine with character and drive, with those of the Empordà you will enjoy the most.
Since the beginning of history, in the lands of the DO Montsant, human activity and respect for the environment have been harmoniously coexisted. The Romans already made wines on this land, the Carthusian monks encouraged the cultivation throughout the region and, in the 19th century, the wines of the area received recognitions to the universal exhibitions, around the world.
The DO Montsant was created in 2002, comprising the municipalities and wineries that, up to that date, formed the sub-area Falset of the DO Tarragona. The DO Montsant has been experiencing spectacular growth since then. If at the time of its birth the DO had 28 wineries, the figure now exceeds 50. Almost 70% of its bottled production is destined for export mainly to Germany, the United States, the United Kingdom and France. The surface of planted vines is about 2,000 hectares and grape production is around 10 million kilos.
When we hear the word Penedes the first thing that comes to mind is an image related to wine. A sea of vineyards caressed by the sun and the Mediterranean form an idyllic landscape that every wine lover should know in situ.
The Penedés Designation of Origin has a characteristic that makes it unique; It is the first denomination of origin that was created in Catalonia and one of the oldest in Spain.
The diversity of Penedes wines is born from the uniqueness of this territory. A thousand scents and aromas are the result of climatic differences, landscape and the variety of its soils, tinted green mountains and blue Mediterranean waters.
As a result of experimentation, constant innovation and the recovery of our own varieties and taking into account the new tendencies of the palates, the D.O. Penedés offers a wide and exquisite range of quality red wines.
SITUATION: north of Penedès; It occupies the Bages region and its urban center is Manresa.
VARIETIES: 6 white and 7 black varieties coexist. the white picapoll is the most emblematic grape. With regard to blacks, important efforts are being made to recover native varieties such as black picapoll, sumoll or bossy; Bordalese varieties are still quite frequent.
SOILS: clayey, sandy and calcareous.
CLIMATE: Mediterranean mid-mountain continental. Few rainfall and strong thermal oscillation.
WINES: the whites are fresh, light and fruity, with the picapoll that offers the most particular examples, loaded with citrus aromas and fresh grass. Blacks are usually fresh, very round and clearly show varieties; unlike what happens in a good part of Catalonia, here the cabernets are comfortable enough, they are not green and they offer very interesting wines. In general, we can say that the particular location of the vineyards of Bages, in a plain surrounded by mountains, gives as fruit complex, elegant and sweet wines. The Pla de Bages is a small and recent denomination (1995) with optimal conditions for the cultivation of the vine and a very dynamic regulatorycouncil. Today we find a modern reflexive vitiviniculture that produces wines of sublime quality and that produces wines of sublime quality and that contrasts with the vineyard huts where the farmers kept the tools and sheltered in other times. Despite admitting the strong tradition of base wine for cava, it should be noted that some wineries are making still wines of the highest quality, especially with the picapoll, a grape that has my heart stolen and that offers delicious wines vintage after vintage.
The Wine Statute promulgated in 1932 by the Ministry of Agriculture already recognizes Priorat as a vitamin zone that should be protected. The application and execution of this law could not be realized due to the socio-political circumstances lived in the country until the end of the Civil War.
On July 23, 1954, the first was approved, and since then, and after several modifications, the quality and specificity that were acquiring their wines achieved the designation of quality origin. Currently at the O.Q. Priorat includes 567 winegrowers.
Of white varieties there are 229,952. strains spread over 100.45 hectares. And of black varieties 4,246,208 ceps in 1,552 hectares. In kilos in 2007, a total of 4,670,387 were collected, distributed in 4,489,285 of black varieties and 181,102 of white varieties.
The Roman Empire was the true potencionador of the Tarragona wines, both for its marketing and for being the initiators of the "Tarragona" designation. This denomination indicated the area where the wine was produced, which was appreciated from one place to another in the empire, as evidenced by writings by Latin writers of the century I, such as Silvi Italic, Martial or Plini the young man.
Since then, the winegrowers from Tarragona have always faced all the adversities that have been presented to them. This fact has allowed us to enjoy a skisite wine, internationally renowned and respected for its high quality, which is undoubtedly one of its most outstanding features.
Currently, the production area extends over 73 municipalities located mainly in the counties of the Camp de Tarragona and part of the Ribera d'Ebre.
The vineyard is present in the region since time immemorial. The customs of Orta (1926) and Miravet (1319) attest to the cultivation of the vine and the production of wine at that time in the region regulating, even, the sale of wine.
